Many palms can grow in Louisiana

The use of palms in home landscapes has gained considerable interest in the last few years. Several reasons have brought about this resurgence. For one, many new, exotic palm species and varieties are more readily available; however, our cold temperatures the past couple of winters have damaged some of the species, and people are searching for the most reliable palms for landscape use.

Sulphur PD announces arrests from June 7-10

The following is a news release from the Sulphur Police Department:

The Sulphur Police Department has reported that from June 7-10, officers of the department investigated seven traffic accidents reporting no injuries and issued fourteen traffic citations.

Officers also responded to several other incidents resulting in nine arrests:

The short height of this year’s rice crop doesn’t mean it is necessarily late in development, LSU AgCenter rice experts advised at the Acadia Parish Rice Field Day on June 14.

Sulphur library to participate in Little Free Library Project

The following is a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Public Library:

Calcasieu Parish Public Library System and Sulphur Parks and Recreation have partnered to provide the community with their own "free, little library."

The Little Free Library movement was launched in 2009 when Tod Bol of Hudson, Wisc., wanted to boost reading and neighborliness in his community. 

In memory of his mother, who was a schoolteacher, he built a library resembling a one-room schoolhouse in his front yard in Hudson.

Vinton to partake in Walk with Your Mayor on June 29

The following is a news release from the Town of Vinton:

Mayor Kenneth Stinson invites Vinton residents to be a part of the Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana by joining him on Saturday, June 29, at 8 a.m. at the Vinton High School stadium for the Walk with Your Mayor event.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the walk.

At the walk, the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital will provide general health information, nutrition information, and free blood pressure screenings.

Sulphur to conduct smoke test on wastewater system

The following is a news release from the City of Sulphur:

Mayor Chris Duncan has announced that as part of the ongoing effort to make improvements to the Sulphur Wastewater Treatment and Collection System, smoke testing of sanitary sewers will be conducted to identify inflow sources, which consist of storm water, surface water, roof runoff, and subsurface drainage that enters the sewer system. The purpose will be to locate any infiltration from rain water which may be going into the City’s wastewater system.

The Sulphur Police Department has reported that from June 6, officers of the department investigated two traffic accidents reporting no injuries and issued no traffic citations.

Officers also responded to several other incidents resulting in two arrests:

Charles Ray Thompson, a Black Male, 31, of Slidell, La., was arrested and booked into the Sulphur City Jail for possession with the intent to distribute CDS type drugs and the use of CDS drugs in the presence of a minor.
