The following is a news release from McNeese State University:
The McNeese Jazz Festival will take place on May 4 on the school campus. This year's guest artist is jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon.
Gordon will perform selections from his recent album "Hello Pops," a tribute to Louis Armstrong, and other selections in the evening concert at 7:30 p.m. with the Banners Big Band.
During the day, there will be 12 visiting school band performances, instrumental clinics, a McNeese mini-concert and awards ceremony, a workshop by Wycliffe Gordon, and a student jam session, as well as the evening concert.
The McNeese Jazz Festival runs side by side with the McNeese Day of Percussion, led by McNeese percussion instructor Lonny Benoit.
Premier McNeese Jazz and Percussion ensembles will be featured in the afternoon mini-concert and awards ceremony.
The festival is a non-competitive performance and education-based event, run by McNeese student volunteers. The Banners Big Band is comprised of guest adjudicators, local professional musicians, McNeese faculty, alumni, and students.
The jazz festival is put on by McNeese, the Banners Series, and Distric V Band Director's Association.
